The American Flag – A Work in Progress

A presentation from the Philadelphia Flag Day Association

June 27 – July 1st and July 4th (closed weekends)

City Hall, Second Floor, NE corner

Most people alive today are only aware of the 48 and 50 star flag. Prior to 1912, anyone could design their own flag and its star pattern as long as it had 13 stripes and the star count matched the current number of states. Presently there is no museum in our Country dedicated to our national symbol and how it has changed through the years. This exhibition is representative of The Philadelphia Flag Day Association’s Collection of Historic American Flags and Banners and our efforts to preserve them for future generations of Americans. Twenty flags will be featured in five large display cases in the public corridors of City Hall near the Offices of the Mayor. Each case will present an historic theme, such as Civil Rights, the 19th century and WWII. Each flag is an individual expression of patriotism and documents a time in the history of America.
